Peter Odemwingie today revealed he fears losing his Albion place as he faces up to a hefty fine for his red card at Fulham.
The Baggies striker apologised for his kick at Cottagers full-back Sascha Riether in the first half of Saturday’s 3-0 defeat. But Odemwingie, who now faces a three-match ban for violent conduct, will be hit by sanctions from the club and fears he may struggle to regain his place when the suspension ends. He told Express & Star:
“We have a lot of good players on the bench and players that didn’t even make the squad on Saturday and are very good. I will work hard over the next couple of weeks to make sure I don’t lose my position. But it is a worry that I might not get my starting shirt back.”
Odemwingie was dismissed with his team 1-0 down to a goal by Dimitar Berbatov, whose penalty made it 2-0 before half-time with Steve Sidwell completing the scoring. The 31-year-old apologised but is now expected to be hit with a five-figure fine in line with the club’s disciplinary procedure.
“I feel like I’ve let myself down. It really feels very bad. I also let my team-mates, the club and fans down. I’m sorry.”
